Bardales, José Antonio Peláez, was born in Chachapoyas, Amazonia, on August 21, 1946, and was a lawyer by profession. He has also held several prominent positions and taught at universities.
Between 2011 and 2014, he served as the country’s prosecutor. As chief supreme prosecutor, he played a pivotal role in several high-profile cases, including the Barrios Altos oral trial that former president Alberto Fujimori followed, the La Cantuta cases, and the kidnappings that took place in the Servicio de Army Intelligence basements.
Peláez Bardales was removed from office by the National Prosecutor’s Office in August 2016 due to his age, as 70 is the minimum age to serve as the supreme prosecutor.
