According to officials from the forest department, an Asiatic lion killed a man in southern India by mauling him to death after he leaped into his enclosure.
On Thursday, February 15, in Tirupati, Andhra Pradesh, 38-year-old Prahlad Gujjar leaped over a 12-foot-tall fence and entered the lion’s cage at the Sri Venkateswara Zoological Park, according to zoo officials.
According to local media reports, Gujjar, a resident of Rajasthan’s Alwar region, allegedly leaped into the enclosure to snap a selfie with the lion while intoxicated.
Police in Tirupati Mallika Garg stated that as soon as they noticed him attempting to scale the fence, the security guard rushed over to sound the alarm. However, he leaped into the enclosure’s water tank.
“When he saw the security guard running towards him, Gujjar jumped onto a water tank and climbed over the 12-foot-high fence surrounding the enclosure, which has a lion and two lionesses,” Officer Gard said.
“He jumped and fell in front of the lion, which mauled him. He died on the spot,” he said.
The lions remained close to the man’s remains until their caregivers persuaded them to enter the feeding enclosures, at which point the man’s body was taken out.
According to Officer Garg, they were looking for his relatives and attempting to find out if he had any mental health problems.
“The post-mortem report will reveal whether or not he was intoxicated,” he stated.
The lion has now been placed in a cage with constant surveillance.
