Akosombo Dam leakage has forced another 300 people to evacuate, and as part of the Safe Alternative Housing Initiative, they are now staying in a contemporary Mepe residence.
Approximately 300 people moved into fully furnished quarters in December 2023.
On September 15, rising water levels caused the Akosombo and Kpong Hydro Dams to begin leaking excess water.
Many Lower Volta Basin people lost their houses and farmlands to flooding that occurred many weeks after the spill. This incident had an impact on nine districts in total.
Tragic tales surfaced from the Volta Region’s South, Central, and North Tongu districts, where the destruction was especially bad. Adidome, Anlo, Mepe, Tefle, Sogakope, and Battor were among the communities that were inundated.
The National Disaster Management Organization (NaDMO) reports that more than 26,000 people were left homeless and/or relocated.
Thanks to Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, the Member of Parliament for North Tongu, these people now have a place to stay.
