GWL blames Tamale water crisis to severe harmattan condition

According to Ghana Water Limited, the country’s northern harmattan weather conditions are to blame for the deterioration of the Tamale community’s water crisis problem.

The Nawuni River is drying up, which is aggravating the problem, according to Stanley Martey, Director of Communications at Ghana Water Limited (GWL). This is because of the unfavorable weather.

On Tuesday, February 13, Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale South, expressed his worries on the severe water scarcity in Tamale, claiming it has lasted for more than two years.

The Member of Parliament bemoaned the extreme suffering that the situation had caused his constituents.

Speaking about the matter, Stanley Martey pointed primarily to the dry weather as the cause of the issue.

We are in the dry season at this time of year, and the Nawuni River, from which we obtain water for treatment, has decreased in level.

Lower levels result in the accumulation of alluvial sand, which degrades the raw water’s quality. Thus, it becomes more challenging for us to obtain low-turbidity water for treatment.

In the meantime, one of the Ghana Water Company Limited’s plants in Kpong, which supplies water to the residents of Somanya and the surrounding area, will close on Wednesday, February 14.

Mr. Martey promises that steps have been made to guarantee there won’t be a water scarcity during the temporary shutdown, which is necessary to enable the installation of a new interconnection pipeline and foot valves at the Kpong Water Treatment Plant.

“We have been preparing for this interconnection for the past two weeks, and we have notified the impacted areas, particularly the entire Krobo area.

“We have managed to add an additional approximately 3 million gallons of water to the system, guaranteeing that we can complete the task in less than 48 hours and reopen the plant.”
