Robert Alan Edwards was an outstanding American broadcast journalist born on May 16, 1947 and suddenly passed away on February 10, 2024 at the age of 76.

Edwards has three marriages. His unions with Sharon Kelly and Joan Murphy terminated in divorce. In 2011, he also wed Windsor Johnston, an NPR news anchor, with whom he lived until his passing.

Edwards was born to a homemaker mother and an accountant father in Louisville, Kentucky. From an early age, he developed an interest in radio and decided to pursue a career in it.
Edwards graduated from the University of Louisville in 1969 after attending St. Xavier High School in Louisville in 1965. In 1972, he graduated with an M.A. in communication from American University in Washington, D.C.
