In the summer of 2001, Handyside became the team captain after signing a free transfer to Stoke City. In 2001–02, he participated in 41 games, including the Football League Second Division play-off final in 2002, in which Stoke defeated Brentford to win promotion. During same season, he also netted Stoke’s first and only goal against Lewes in an FA Cup match.
