Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has come under fire from Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, the Minority Leader in Parliament, over remarks he made on Wednesday, February 7, about the power of the Economic Management Team (EMT), which Bawumia headed.

Leading NDC MP in Parliament, Dr. Ato Forson, angrily dismissed Dr. Bawumia’s assertions, calling them untrue and unbearable to the Ghanaian people.

He said that Dr. Bawumia’s comments were nothing more than justifications for the EMT’s flaws, which have caused great hardship for the Ghanaian people.

The former Deputy Finance Minister emphasized Ghanaians’ alertness in a social media post, saying that they would not be moved by Dr. Bawumia’s hyperbole.

Rather than running for president, Dr. Ato Forson advised the Vice President to own up to the mistakes made in the policies he oversaw and to put any better plans into action.

“Why is Dr. Bawumia now downplaying the relevance of the Economic Management Team and his chairmanship at a time when the people of Ghana are suffering greatly as a result of the government’s disastrous economic policies? Why does Dr. Bawumia appear to have anything fresh to offer the Ghanaian people while evading his responsibilities?”

“Just so you know, Dr. Bawumia oversees the Economic Management Team, which is where important economic decisions are made for the country.”

“After that, these decisions are brought before Cabinet for approval, after which Dr. Bawumia defends them alongside Finance Minister Ken Ofori-Atta,” he stated.

The Economic Management Team (EMT), which Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia oversaw, was not empowered to make decisions.

He clarified that the EMT, acting as a cabinet subcommittee, was only able to make recommendations—not carry them out.

During a speech on Wednesday, February 7, at the University of Professional Studies in Accra, Dr. Bawumia emphasized his desire to exercise his decision-making authority should he be elected president.
