On social media, a video of Nigerians celebrating their football team’s Africa Cup of Nations triumph over South Africa has gone viral.
In the video, Super Eagles supporters sing the hit song “Water” by South African artist Tyla while mocking their opponents by dousing them in liquid.
She defeated many Nigerian celebrities to win Best African Music Performance at the Grammy Awards on Sunday.
Nigerians, disappointed, replied by threatening to exact retribution in the Afcon semifinal. Both African giants are making fun of each other with the hashtag #NGARSA, which is now trending.
In the teasing, Nigerians have also claimed that their Jollof Rice is superior to South African Bobotie, a hot dish made with minced beef.
However, music has taken center stage. Nigerians argue that Afrobeats is unique and that South Africans should stick to dancing to amapiano, slow-motion house music, hip-hop, and soul combinations that have been increasingly popular worldwide in recent years.
A well-known Nigerian pastor named Jimmy Odukoya has also joined in on the humor, complimenting Bafana Bafana’s performance despite their loss while admonishing the South African players, saying, “You need water.”
