Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the leader of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has pledged to enhance the government’s educational initiative, the Free Senior High School (Free SHS).

According to the vice president, the government announced that, in 2023, there were approximately 500,000 students enrolled in SHS, the highest enrollment level ever.

Dr. Bawumia gave a national address on February 7 at the UPSA auditorium, outlining his vision for the country and describing the performance of students who took the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in 2023 as the best since 2015.

Additionally, we have expanded enrollment in Free SHS from 800,000 in 2016 to 1.4 million by 2022. The highest-ever number of students enrolled in SHS was approximately 500,000 in 2023. In addition, we have gender parity and the best student performance since 2015 at the WASSCE. Free SHS will continue and be enhanced under my administration. Who can you rely on to safeguard and enhance free SHS? It is Dr. Bawumia once more.

The free SHS policy has encountered difficulties. The Akufo-Addo administration is adamant about not reviewing the policy to improve it, despite numerous organizations and individuals pressuring it to do so.
