Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), has announced that graduates will no longer be required to complete national service if they wish to find employment right away after completing their postsecondary education.

He believes that in order to better serve the needs of employers looking for recent graduates, the current national service program’s design needs to be changed.

Dr. Bawumia presented his vision to party leaders and supporters on Wednesday, February 7, 2024, at the UPSA auditorium. He said that students would have the option of taking part in national service or not.

It’s time, ladies and gentlemen, to reevaluate the purpose of our nation’s service program in order to help our youth find better jobs. My government will suggest exempting from national service anyone who can find employment after completing their education.

Students will no longer be required to perform national service, and they will be free to choose not to. The NPP flagbearer added, “This will also encourage companies to visit campuses for recruitment every year.”
