Bill Northey, the 64-year-old former secretary of agriculture for Iowa, passed away. “A great leader whose work ethic and passion for Iowa agriculture was unmatched,” was how Iowa Governor Kim Reynolds described Northey in a statement released on Monday afternoon.

Spirit Lake farmer Northey served as Iowa’s agriculture secretary for eleven years, from 2007 to 2018, before resigning to take up an administrative position at the Department of Agriculture of the United States.

From 2018 to 2021, he served as the undersecretary for Farm Production and Conservation, where he was in charge of the Risk Management Agency, the Natural Resources Conservation Service, and the Farm Service Agency.

He served as the Agribusiness Association of Iowa’s CEO most recently. Northey obtained his master’s degree in business from Southwest Minnesota State University and his degree in agricultural business from Iowa State University, according to a news statement issued by the university’s officials announcing Northey’s passing.
