The Kaneshie District Court has convicted a motorbike rider and his passenger who did not wear crash helmets.

The rider, Joshua Kumessa, was also accused of operating the motorcycle without a license and without an insurance coverage.

Kumessa and pillion rider Eugene Darko were jailed in accordance with their admission of guilt.

Kumessa, the motor rider, was fined 50 penalty units, or GHC600.00, by the court presided over by Mrs. Ama Adomako Kwakye, while Darko, the pillion rider, was fined 25 penalty units, or GHC300.00.

If Kumessa doesn’t pay the fines, he could go to prison for five weeks, and Darko could go to jail for two weeks.

The Ghana Police Service’s Headquarters Operations Unit stopped Kumessa, the rider of a Royal Motorbike with registration number M-19-GR 7909, at the Opebia traffic crossroads on January 14, 2024, at approximately 7:20 p.m., according to testimony given in court by Police Chief Inspector Apewah Achana.

Kumessa was found to be riding without a rider’s license, an insurance certificate, or a helmet during the inspection. The pillion rider, Darko, was likewise without wearing a helmet.

After being placed under custody, both were brought to the Airport Divisional Motor Traffic and Transport Department.

Chief Inspector Achana disclosed that their prosecution resulted from investigations. Kumessa was charged with riding without the necessary paperwork and transporting a passenger without a helmet.

Darko risks two weeks in jail and Kumessa faces five weeks in prison if the fines are not paid.
