Namkoong Won was best known as a South Korean actor. He was born in Hong Gyeong-il in 1934. He was a popular actor in the 1960s along with Shin Seong-il, Shin Young-kyun, and Choi Moo-ryong. His son was a South Korean politician, Hong Jung-wook.

Namkoong Won was married to his wife Yang Chun-ja who is a South Korean politician and former Samsung executive. She has represented Gwangju at the National Assembly since 2020. A former member of the Democratic Party, she founded the Hope of Korea party in 2023.
