The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) have appointed Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona as their next Chief of the Army Staff (COAS).
This was said during a handover ceremony on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, at the Odartey-Wellington Block courtyard of the Ghana Army Headquarters (AHQ), Burma Camp in Accra.
It was presided over by the Deputy Minister for Defence and Member of Parliament for Atwima-Kwanwoma, Kofi Amankwa-Manu.
Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah, who was named Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), steps down to make way for him.
Prior to his promotion, Major General Onwona served as the Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College (GAFCSC).
As the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Air Force, President Nana Akufo-Addo was thanked by Major General Oppong-Peprah in his parting speech for having trusted him enough to name him Army Commander.
He thanked all staff members, including civilians, for their prayers and support, which allowed him to do great things while in office.
Major Oppong-Peprah hoped his successor would get the same assistance and prayers. To express gratitude for the former COAS’s growth and progress, Army Headquarters gave him a 5.0 horsepower air conditioner along with other gifts.
