The goal of Lydia Seyram Alhassan’s youth empowerment initiatives in her district is to lower unemployment and generate prosperity for all. She is the Member of Parliament for the Ayawaso West Wuogon constituency.
Training in skills, assistance with real-world education, and participation in her own constituent projects roads, for example are among the activities offered.
As she formally launched her parliamentary campaign at Shiashi in Accra on Friday night, the MP who also serves as the Second Majority Chief Whip in the legislature announced this.
She became the party’s representative without opposition after receiving the applause and support of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) delegates.
Following delegates’ raucous cheering, Lydia Agyiri, the Electoral Commission’s electoral officer for Ayawaso West Wuogon, raised the MP’s hands.
Madam Alhassan acted quickly following the applause, urging the young person to be “her backbone” in order to keep the seat.
She is competing in a two-horse contest against National Democratic Congress (NDC) member and farmer John Dumelo, who is from Ghana.
Following the violently charged by-election on January 31, 2019, the constituency is still one of Ghana’s political hotspots.
The seat was left empty because Member of Parliament (MP) Emmanuel Kyeremanteng Agyarko passed away on November 21, 2018, hence the Electoral Commission (EC) called a by-election.
The party then decided to appoint the deceased man’s wife, Madam Alhassan, to take the vacant seat. She faced off against Dumelo and prevailed.
