Akufo-Addo appoints Major General Oppong-Peprah as Chief of Defence Staff

Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah has been named Chief of Defense Staff by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, with effect from Thursday, February 1, 2024.

The appointment “follows the imminent completion of the tour of duty and subsequent retirement from the Ghana Armed Forces on Thursday, February 1, 2024, of the current Chief of Defense Staff, Vice Admiral Seth Amoama,” according to a statement signed by Eugene Arhin, the director of communications at the Office of the President.

“With effect from Thursday, February 1, 2024, the president has also appointed Major General Bismarck Kwasi Onwona as Chief of Army Staff, succeeding Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah.”

By Article 212 of the Republic’s Constitution, this appointment has also been made contingent on consultation with the Council of State. Major General Onwona was the Commandant of the Ghana Armed Forces Command and Staff College before his new role.

According to the statement, “Air Vice Marshal Frederick Asare Kwasi Bekoe and Chief of Naval Staff, respectively, Rear Admiral Issah Adams Yakubu and Yakubu remain in their positions.”

After completing Regular Career Course 26 and placing first on the merit list, Major General Thomas Oppong-Peprah received the Military Cane from the Ghana Military Academy and was commissioned into the Ghana Armed Forces in 1986.

As a Second Lieutenant, he was assigned to the Armoured Reconnaissance Regiment at Gondar Barracks in Accra.

His civil education includes an Executive Master of Business Administration (Human Resource Management) from the University of Ghana, Legon, and a Master of Arts in International Security and Strategy from Kings College, London.

In addition, he holds a post-graduate certificate in public administration from the Ghana Institute of Management and Public Administration and a Bachelor of Science degree in administration (human resource management) from the University of Ghana.
