Of the ten suspected coup plotters, six have been found guilty by an Accra High Court of both high treason conspiracy and high treason offense.
The six have been given the death-by-hanging sentence. Nonetheless, ACP Benjamin Agordzo, Corporal Seidu Abubakar, and Colonel Gameli have all been found not guilty.
On April 24, 2021, charges of conspiracy to commit high treason, abetment to high treason, and high treason were brought against Dr. Frederick Yao Mac-Palm, the now-deceased chief executive officer of Citadel Hospital, and ACP Dr. Agordzo, along with eight other defendants.
During the trial, however, all ten of the accused entered not-guilty pleas and were released on bond. Dr. Mac-Palm’s testimony was deleted from the court’s files following his passing.
Director of Public Prosecution Yvonne Atakora Obuobisa, Hilda Craig, Winifred Sarpong, Lawrencia Adika, and Akosua Agyapomaa Agyemang were among the Attorney General’s Office members who led the prosecution under the direction of Attorney General Godfred Yeboah Dame.
Following the verdict, Attorney General and Minister of Justice Godfred Yeboah Dame told the media that the case had “significance to the Constitution of Ghana.”
