Mario E. Dorsonville dies at 63: Cause of death and obituary announcement
Just over a year after taking over as the leader of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux, Bishop Mario Dorsonville passed away on Friday, January 19, 2024. Facebook was used by the diocese to announce the news.
The vicar general of the diocese, the Rev. Simon Peter Engurait, announced that Dorsonville passed away at 6:50 p.m. on Friday as a result of complications following a recent illness.
Vicar general of the diocese, Rev. Simon Peter Engurait, wrote, “This is not the kind of message any one of us would expect to receive.” “My heart is broken as I make this news to you.” “There are a lot of questions that I know you will have.
“We ask for your patience as we begin to navigate these uncomfortable times. In the interim, I respectfully ask that you pray for him.”
Pope Francis named Dorsonville the diocese’s new bishop on February 1. The diocese includes eastern St. Mary Parish to the west. Dorsonville assumed the role on March 29. He was succeeded as archbishop of Louisville, Kentucky, by Bishop Shelton Fabre.
A few weeks short of a year elapsed between Dorsonville’s appointment to the Houma-Thibodaux Diocese and Fabre’s appointment to the Louisville Archdiocese in 2022. The lengthy process of selecting a new bishop will involve consultations with parties as far afield as Louisiana and the Vatican.
