Alhaji Hamid Gbewaa, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Northern Regional Vice Chairman, has been suspended from the organization.
This comes after he allegedly attacked Hajia Shamima Yakubu, the NDC’s regional treasurer.
After receiving a briefing regarding the assault, the Functional Executive Committee (FEC) of the NDC voted to suspend Alhaji Gbewaa immediately on January 16. The National Disciplinary Committee has also been tasked with deciding on the suspension.
However, the party said that reports that said the event occurred at the meeting when the Regional Treasurer was attacked in front of some national executive party members were untrue.
The statement read, “The NDC takes a very serious view of the conduct of the party officer responsible for the assault, and measures would be taken to address the matter thoroughly at its next meeting of its Functional Executive Committee meeting to leave no doubt in everyone’s mind that the party does not approve of unlawful acts of assault and battery.”
The party’s general secretary, Fifi Fiavi Kwetey, signed a statement denouncing the attack and stating that the purpose of the meeting was to discuss campaign strategy, not accounts, reconciliation, or related concerns.
The statement read, “In the strongest terms possible, the party condemns this assault on a party official, which resulted in her receiving hospital treatment.”
In the statement, the NDC stated that it was determined to make sure all of its members upheld the long-standing principles that have made Ghana’s internal politics so alluring to millions of people, and from which they derive their confidence that the party will be the next government in waiting.
