The University of Pennsylvania announced on Tuesday that Claire Fagin, 97, had passed away. Fagin was the first woman to lead an Ivy League school and had previously served as interim president from July 1993 to June 1994.
Fagin had been the dean of the university’s nursing school for numerous years.

Claire M. Fagin, a former dean of the School of Nursing and interim president of the University of Pennsylvania, passed away on January 16, 2024, at the age of 97 at her Manhattan residence, according to a statement from the university. The reason of death remains undisclosed at this time.

Prior to her retirement in 1996, Fagin taught and conducted research among the nursing faculty at the University of Pennsylvania institution of Nursing, where she held the position of dean from 1977 to 1992. The institution also stated that she had served as interim president.
“She was a passionate advocate for universal health care, nursing education, and the advancement of women in health-related fields as dean of Penn Nursing,” interim president J. Larry Jameson said on Tuesday. An event honoring her life and accomplishments is scheduled by the university for spring.
