Former leader of the federal NDP, Ed Broadbent, has passed away. He died at the age of 87 on Thursday, January 11, 2024.

The Broadbent Institute, an organization he founded, announced his passing on Thursday. It did not give a cause of death.
“Our country has lost a fierce champion for ordinary Canadians, an intellectual who strongly believed in building a good society,” the statement said. “Ed devoted decades of his life to fighting for justice and equality in Canada and around the world.”

However, Ed Broadbent was the second of three children born in Oshawa, Ont. in 1936. His father, a clerk at General Motors, and his homemaker mother were both steadfast conservative voters.
Ed Broadbent received a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in political science from the University of Toronto in 1966, with a thesis titled “The Good Society of John Stuart Mill” under the supervision of C.B. Macpherson. Until his death, he was a fellow in the School of Policy Studies at Queen’s University, Canada.
