American political scientist and educator who was acting Chancellor of the University of Wisconsin–Madison in 1987 Bernard Cecil Cohen has passed away. He died at the age of 97 on Tuesday, January 9, 2024, in Madison.

However, Bernard Cecil was born in Northampton, Massachusetts on February 22, 1926. He received his bachelor’s, master’s, and doctorate degrees in political science from Yale University. He became an original member of Princeton University’s Center of International Studies and taught at Princeton from 1951 to 1959.
In 1959, Bernard Cecil taught at the University of Wisconsin–Madison. He became chair of the political science department, dean of the graduate school, and then vice-chancellor. In 1987, Cohen was acting chancellor of the University of Wisconsin–Madison. In 1989, he retired and lived in Madison, Wisconsin.
Bernard Cecil was survivor by his wife of 77 years, Laura (Toby) Cohen; daughters Barbara Cohen (Shmuel Inbar) and Janie Cohen (Larry Crist); grandchildren Sara Christopherson (Jonny Hunter), Talia Inbar, Yaniv Inbar (Petra) and Yaara Inbar (Neer Roggel); and five great-grandchildren.
