Matthew Perry cause of death determined as ‘acute effects of ketamine’

Matthew Perry died at his home in Los Angeles on October 28, 2023, at the age of 54, and his cause of death is determined as the ‘acute effects of ketamine’.

Researching Ketamine is a dissociative anesthetic used medically for induction and maintenance of anesthesia. It is also used as a treatment for depression, a pain management tool, and as a recreational drug.

According to the toxicology report from the Los Angeles County Medical Examiner’s Office factors that contributed to the “Friends” actor’s death included drowning, coronary artery disease, and the effects of buprenorphine used to treat opioid use disorder. The manner of death was ruled an accident.

Matthew Perry had been undergoing ketamine infusion therapy before his death, reportedly for depression and anxiety. The toxicology report adds: “At the high levels of ketamine found in his postmortem blood specimens, the main lethal effects would be from both cardiovascular overstimulation and respiratory depression.”
