Burnie McGinnis was the father of a strapping 6-foot-8, 235-pound forward George McGinnis, and his mother’s name is Willie McGinnis.
George had committed to Indiana University on a full scholarship, making him an instant favorite with Hoosier fans, But then McGinnis’ father left for work and never returned home. It was a cruel way for McGinnis to learn how fragile life is.
In George’s words, My dad got me and my sister up that morning and cooked us breakfast,” said McGinnis, who turned 67 on Aug. 12. “About 10:30, the phone rings and this guy is saying your father’s been in a horrible accident. My mom was out of town at a funeral. Me and my sister jumped in this raggedy car my dad had bought me and raced over to the site.
