BBC Young Playwright’s Award winner who was awarded at least sixteen honorary doctorates Benjamin Zephaniah has passed away at the age of 65, on December 7, 2023.

Benjamin Zephaniah died as a result of a brain tumor. He was diagnosed with a brain tumor eight weeks ago, with a post on his Instagram handle detailing him as a”true pioneer and innovator” who “gave the world so much”.
“Benjamin’s wife was by his side throughout and was with him when he passed,” it added.

Benjamin Zephaniah’s full name is Benjamin Obadiah Iqbal Zephaniah and was born on April 15, 1958, in the Handsworth district of Birmingham, England, where he was also raised. He referred to this area as the “Jamaican capital of Europe”. Zephaniah was the son of a Barbadian postman and a Jamaican nurse.
