George Santos, an American politician who served as the representative for New York’s 3rd congressional district in the US Congress from January to December 2023, is under fire and is currently in Brazil.
Why was George Santos in Brazil?
George Santos, a Republican, agreed with Brazilian authorities to have the criminal accusations against him in a 2008 case dropped after he acknowledged stealing.
In exchange for the prosecution being withdrawn, Mr. Santos has been granted 30 days to pay the fines and reparations.
More severe federal allegations of fraud, money laundering, and public fund theft are still pending against him in the US. In response to the US federal allegations, Mr. Santos entered a not-guilty plea.

Throughout his brief tenure on Capitol Hill, the 34-year-old lawmaker who was elected to the House of Representatives in November has faced several allegations of deceit and fraud.
Additionally, he is suspected of taking unemployment benefits during the COVID-19 outbreak despite having a stated yearly salary of $120,000 from his job at an investment firm. Mr. Santos is accused of lying to Congress about his financial situation, including his income.
