David Long Jr. was born on March 23, 1999, in Coquitlam, British Columbia, Canada. He grew up in Eugene, Oregon, and attended Sheldon High School, where he played football, basketball, and baseball. He was a two-time all-state selection in football and was also named the state’s defensive player of the year as a senior.

Long committed to play college football at West Virginia University over offers from Arizona State, Colorado State, and San Diego State. He played in all 11 games as a true freshman in 2017, starting two games at safety. He made 26 tackles, one interception, and one forced fumble.
