Peter Nygård’s parents: Meet Hilkka Nygård and Eeli Nygård
Peter Nygard is the son of Eeli and Hikka Nygård. When Peter was a little boy in 1952, his parents, Eeli and Hikka, immigrated to Canada. They were bakers. After that, they moved to Winnipeg.
On Nygård’s website, it states that his mother died in 2010. According to the online obituary, his mother is Hilkka Nygård, who was born in 1922 on a secluded island in Finland. Hilkka wed Helsinki-born baker Eeli Nygård on June 24, 1940.
On July 24, 1941, Peter was born, and on October 31, 1942, Liisa, his sister, was born. The Nygård family left Finland for Canada in 1952, initially relocating to the Canadian prairies in Deloraine, Manitoba, and then settling in Winnipeg, Manitoba, permanently. Nygård Bakery, which Peter’s parents founded in Winnipeg, flourished.
Hilkka, Peter’s mother, was reportedly “highly involved” in the day-to-day management of her son’s enterprises in the Bahamas and served as acting director of several of his companies.
