Raphael Dwamena, 28, died on the football pitch on Saturday, according to Albanian media.
The Egnatia striker, the highest scorer in Albania’s Superior League, suffered a heart attack during the match between Egnatia and Partizani.
In the 24th minute, the Ghanaian dropped on the pitch, unconscious. Supersport.al reports that he was sent to the Kavaja hospital but died after suffering another heart attack.
In 2017, Dwamena was diagnosed with a cardiac ailment. While with Levante UD, he had an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator (ICD) placed through surgery in January 2020, allowing his club to monitor his heart during matches.
In October 2020, the ICD revealed values that were deemed excessive, and his club at the time, Vejle Boldklub, removed him from team activities as a result.
In October 2021, during the first half of Blau-Weiss Linz’s game against Harterg in the Austrian Cup, Dwamena slumped on the pitch and was shocked with an ICD before soon stabilizing.
Dwamena scored nine goals in the current edition.
