Frank Frederick Borman II was best known as an American United States Air Force (USAF) colonel, aeronautical engineer, NASA astronaut, test pilot, and businessman. He was the commander of Apollo 8, the first mission to fly around the Moon, and together with crewmates Jim Lovell and William Anders, became the first of 24 humans to do so, for which he was awarded the Congressional Space Medal of Honor.

Frank Borman was born on March 14, 1928, in Gary, Indiana. His love for aviation began when he was 5 years old at a point where he visited Wright Field in Dayton, Ohio. His family moved to Tucson, Arizona. He built model airplanes and got a pilot’s license by the time he turned 15.
Frank Borman went to West Point just after World War II ended and graduated in 1950. He became an Air Force fight pilot. He got a master’s degree in aeronautical engineering from the California Institute of Technology in 1957. He went on to become a test pilot and helped to create spaceflight testing programs at Edwards Air Force Base in California.
