Ghana’s Sanitation and Water Resources Minister, Freda Akosua Prempeh has said victims of the Akosombo and Kpong Dam spillage didn’t adhere to warning signs.

Speaking at a press conference of the Ghana Water Company this week, Fred said residents of the affected areas in the Volta Region were adamant when they were asked to be evacuated to safety.

“They didn’t want to be evacuated. They stayed there till the end when we started spilling,” she claimed.

She further stated that their actions have cost the government of Ghana millions of cash on relief items and education materials.

“Unfortunately, look at what is happening and the government has to spend millions of money on relief items and on education,” she added.

Her statement ruffled feathers, with the majority of social media users lambasting her for making such insensitive statements during these hard times.

“They should have left to where? Which offer was given to them? Where exactly were you expecting them to go?” Instagram user @mayaqueengh asked.

Another user @_selormkofid slammed her: “Because they are birds, so they have just flown away and made a nest somewhere. Some of you open your mouth and speak like you don’t reason. Someone should leave their only household, home and hometown with nowhere to go and just disappear because the VRA and all other agencies are lazy enough to not find any other means to divert the supposed damage. 3la!”

The Volta Dam spillage started in the middle of October 2023 and has affected over 30,000 residents so far.
