Akosombo Dam Spillage: ‘You didn’t vote for me but I’ll try and help’ – Akufo-Addo to Voltarians

Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo rubbed salt into the wounds of victims of the Akosombo Dam Spillage during his last visit.

On Tuesday, the President visited one of the places flooded in the Volta region to witness the current situation in the region himself. However, what appears to be a bad joke from him worsened the situation.

“I hope everybody here takes the message all across that when these things happen and government acts, politics does not come into the matter at all,” he said while addressing the people.

He said he took an oath to serve all, no matter their background or voting pattern.

“When I took the oath of office as President, I took the oath as president of every single individual in Ghana. And whether they voted for me or not, once I’ve taken the oath I’m the president of all the people.”

President Akufo-Addo then made what seemed to be a jest statement regarding how many votes he had from the region and laughed it off.

“So I came here because Ghanaians are having difficulties and are suffering. And it is my responsibility to try and help. Because if it is a question of counting who votes and doesn’t vote for me, I shouldn’t be here. Because you don’t vote for me. But that is not my concern,” he concluded.

Ghanaians on social media didn’t take Akufo-Addo’s statement lightly, with the majority lambasting him for making an insensitive joke during a hard time.

“Was this necessary at the moment, absolutely not, the people are in need instead of consoling them and giving them the necessary assistance as president you are now going back saying who voted for you or did not,” Instagram user @ericodeparadise said.

Another user saw nothing wrong, saying: “Masa you should get some sense in your heads, what he said was very sensible but because English is not your mate you find it difficult to understand. Translate it to your local dialect and get the understanding.”
