Early in the 1980s, Tingle started her career in Sydney as a cadet journalist for Fairfax Media’s Australian Financial Review and Business Review Weekly, where she covered financial deregulation and dollar flotation.
She transferred to The Australian newspaper of News Limited in 1987 to work as an economics journalist. In 1992, she was named chief political correspondent, and starting in 1994, she was named national affairs correspondent.
