On January 24, 1968, Mary Lou Retton, a former American gymnast, was born in Fairmont, West Virginia. Her father, Ronnie, ran a company that marketed coal-moving equipment. Although she attended Fairmont Senior High School, she never received a diploma. She competed in the 1984 Olympics while attending high school in Los Angeles, California.
She earned a gold medal, two silver medals, two bronze medals, and a total of four medals at the 1984 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles.
