Hickox attended Aiglon College in Switzerland for his education. He began his career in London as a club promoter before moving to Los Angeles in 1986, where he worked as a writer and filmmaker in the late 1980s.
After a string of 1990s horror pictures, including the third installment of the Hellraiser series, he subsequently began directing action flicks. As a result, HBO hired him to produce Full Eclipse, its first action/horror movie. Full Eclipse gave rise to the Friday night action slot, which lasted for more than five years and to which Hickox contributed to several other projects.
