The late Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela was a South African anti-apartheid activist and politician who served as the first president of South Africa from 1994 to 1999. He was the country’s first black head of state and the first elected in a fully representative democratic election.

Mandela died on December 5, 2013, at the age of 95, around 20:50 local time at his home in Houghton, surrounded by his family after suffering from a prolonged respiratory infection.

Zuma publicly announced his death on television, proclaiming ten days of national mourning, a memorial service held at Johannesburg’s FNB Stadium on December 10, 2013, and December 8, as a national day of prayer and reflection.

Mandela’s body lay in state from 11 to 13 December at the Union Buildings in Pretoria and a state funeral was held on 15 December in Qunu.

Makaziwe Mandela is the daughter of Nelson Mandela and his first wife Evelyn Mase. She was born in 1947, into a family of chieftains. Her father Nelson was a direct descendant of the holders of the kingship of the Thembu people and was himself the heir of the chieftaincy of Mvezo.
