She was a graduate from Gainesville High School in 1955, she attended the University of Florida for one year, then transferred to Stetson College in DeLand, Florida. She graduated from Stetson in May 1959 with a B.A. in Arts and Letters. She earned a Master’s degree from the University of Southwestern Louisiana in 1967, and a Ph.D. in English Literature from Duke University in 1974.
