Former American professional basketball player Phillip Sellers Jr. played for the Detroit Pistons of the NBA. On November 20, 1953, he was born in New York City, and on September 20, 2023, he passed away there.
While attending Thomas Jefferson High School in Brooklyn, New York, Sellers participated in basketball. At the prep level, he was successful, taking home the MVP Award at the Pittsburgh Dapper Dan Tournament at the conclusion of his senior year against the best high school athletes in the country.
In addition, after being selected to the Jefferson Third Team Parade All-American, he earned over 200 basketball scholarship offers from colleges across the nation.
In order to play for Notre Dame, Sellers signed a word of commitment but then changed his mind because of academic issues. He consequently enrolled at Livingston College in New Jersey, a part of Rutgers University established especially to support students from underprivileged backgrounds.
After completing his studies at Rutgers, Sellers was chosen by the Detroit Pistons in the third round (38th overall) of the 1976 NBA Draft. When Sellers, who had previously played forward in college, was shifted to guard, he found it difficult to handle the added ball-handling responsibilities. “I couldn’t play guard,” Sellers said. They had no idea. Even I had difficulty grasping this.
Sellers returned to Rutgers in the 1980s and served as an assistant coach there for four years before moving on to a career in the private sector. Sellers was admitted to the Rutgers Athletics Hall of Fame in 1993 and the New York City Basketball Hall of Fame in 2010.
