Maynard was born Jan. 25, 1935, in Crosbyton, Texas, and raised around the cotton fields of West Texas and Oklahoma.
Finding jobs meant the family uprooted frequently; by the time Maynard graduated, he had attended 13 schools.

In his honor, the Jets retired Maynard’s jersey number.
