On October 6, 1977, Francis Xavier Suarez, the 43rd mayor of Miami, Florida, was born. Suarez graduated from Immaculata-LaSalle High School. Suarez is the son of former Miami County Commissioner and Mayor Xavier Suarez. He graduated in 1996 and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in finance at Florida International University (FIU) in the top 10% of his class.
Suarez was elected in 2017 with 86 % of the vote and re-elected in 2021 with 78 % of the vote. He is a Republican, however, the job of Miami mayor is nonpartisan. Suarez previously held the office of City of Miami Commissioner for District 4, which he has held since winning a runoff election on November 17, 2009.
Suarez was previously president of the Miami-Dade County League of Cities and is currently vice-chair of the Miami-Dade Transportation Planning Organization (TPO). While working for the TPO, Suarez pushed the Strategic Miami Area Rapid Transit (SMART) Plan. The SMART Plan constructs six key routes and adds new bus lines to increase the number of mass transit alternatives available in Miami-Dade County.
