Known for his work on Marvel Comics’ The Amazing Spider-Man and for co-creating characters including Mary Jane Watson, the Punisher, Wolverine, and Luke Cage, John Victor Romita Sr. (January 24, 1930 – June 12, 2023) was an American comic book artist.
Romita was the spouse of Virginia Romita, who managed Marvel’s traffic for many years, and the father of John Romita Jr., another comic book artist.
Through Timely Comics, the forerunner to Marvel, where he did his first comic book work as a ghost artist in 1949, Romita was introduced to editor-in-chief Stan Lee.
Romita created his first superhero work, a 1950s revival of Captain America, as well as horror, war, and romance comics for Atlas Comics (formerly Timely), which he started doing in 1951.
