German virologist and professor emeritus Harald zur Hausen NAS EASA APS lived from 11 March 1936 to 28 May 2023.
He conducted studies on cervical cancer and identified the part papillomaviruses play in the disease, for which he was awarded the 2008 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine.
Zur Hausen began working as a lab assistant at the University of Düsseldorf’s Institute for Microbiology two years after receiving his medical degree.
After working there for three and a half years, he relocated to Philadelphia to join renowned virologists Werner and Gertrude Henle at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia’s Virus Laboratories.
