American politician and lawyer Henry Dargan McMaster was born on May 27, 1947. Since 2017, he has been South Carolina’s 117th governor. He was a Republican who served as South Carolina’s 91st lieutenant governor from 2015 to 2017 under the leadership of then-governor Nikki Haley. He was the state’s 50th attorney general from 2003 to 2011.
Both as a private attorney and a federal prosecutor, McMaster worked for U.S. Senator Strom Thurmond. In 1981, President Ronald Reagan appointed him as the United States attorney for the District of South Carolina.
He sprang to fame as he led Operation Jackpot, a probe into marijuana traffickers in that state. The incumbent Democrat Fritz Hollings defeated McMaster, the Republican candidate for the U.S. Senate in South Carolina in 1986. Later, he was vanquished.
