Having assumed office as North Carolina’s 75th governor in 2017, Roy Asberry Cooper III is an American lawyer and politician born on June 13, 1957.
He represented the North Carolina General Assembly in the House of Representatives and Senate between 1987 and 2001, and he was the Democratic Party’s nominee for the position of 49th attorney general of North Carolina.

Cooper went to a public school and spent his summers working on his parents’ tobacco plantation.
In 1975, he obtained his high school diploma from Northern Nash. At the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, he was awarded the Morehead Scholarship for his undergraduate studies.
He belonged to the Chi Psi Fraternity as a freshman at UNC. The Young Democrats at the university chose him to be its president.
In 1982, he graduated with a Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina School of Law.
