Berger was born into a family of hoteliers in Bad Ischl, Austria. Despite having little interest in food or the hotel sector, Berger first trained and worked in this field after getting his Matura. At the age of 18, he relocated to London, England, where he worked odd jobs and pursued acting instruction. Berger relocated to Rome after finishing his language studies at the Università per Stranieri di Perugia in Italy.
He is recognized as a sex figure and a pop star from that time period. He was a major star in European cinema in the late 1960s and early 1970s.
