News reaching us at Ghanafuo.com is that a Nigerian senator and his lovely wife have been jailed in the UK for organ trafficking.
This move by the honorable and his wife was in an attempt to procure a kidney for their daughter, Sonia.
In a historic case, Ike Ekweremadu and Beatrice Ekweremadu were sentenced to almost a decade in prison and four-and-a-half years, respectively. A doctor(as middleman), Obinna Obeta, was also jailed for his part in the plot.
The trio had attempted to traffic a 21-year-old market trader from Lagos to the UK to harvest his kidney for a private transplant at the Royal Free Hospital in Camden, north London.
The victim had been told to pretend to be Sonia’s cousin to secure the transplant, but the hospital consultant became suspicious when the young man appeared unaware of his role and wasn’t 41, as his passport claimed.
The Nigerian national later informed the police that he had no idea his kidney was to be removed until he met the surgeon at the Royal Free Hospital.
The victim later ran away for barely three days before informing the officers at Staines Police Station about the scheme.
This case highlights the worrying rise in modern slavery and human trafficking cases, including organ harvesting.
Following these worrying developments, the UK police have issued a strong public warning about the prevalent occurrence of such crimes.
