Tragedy strikes as young boy dies in landfill site

According to our correspondents, young boys searching for scrap at the Oti Landfill Site near Kumasi encountered a tragedy when one of them unexpectedly fell into a pit and died.

Joseph Annan Jr., 14, accidentally stepped into a deep pit of piled-up garbage and sunk deep into it. His friends managed to rescue him and rushed him to the hospital, but he was declared dead on arrival.

The incident occurred around 5 pm on April 30, 2023, and was reported to the police by Joseph Annan, the father of the deceased, and Foster Yeboah, Deputy Manager of Oti Landfill Site. According to the police report, Joseph Annan Junior and his friends went to the landfill site to search for scrap when the unforeseen event took place.

The police visited the hospital and saw the dead body of the deceased, noting that apart from old wounds on both legs, no marks of external injuries were found. The lifeless body has been deposited at the Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital (KATH) mortuary in Kumasi, pending autopsy.

The incident highlights the dangers of searching for scrap in such hazardous areas and the need for proper safety precautions to be taken.
