Former director of the Thessaloniki International Film Festival, Michel Dimopoulos, has died. He was 74.

Michel Dimopoulos’s cause of death: How did Michel Dimopoulos die?

The renowned filmmaker’s cause of death has not been disclosed to the public. We shall update it as soon as we discover it.

Dimopoulos was the artistic director of Thessaloniki from 1991 to 2005. In a statement released on Thursday afternoon, the festival said that Dimopoulos introduced a “fresh breath of originality” to Thessaloniki during his term and “expanded the institution’s international horizons.”

“Michel had always been on the side of the Festival and its people. He was an ardent film lover and a passionate supporter of independent European cinema,” the statement revealed.

“He will live on in Olympion’s corridors, in the Port, inside the movie theaters, tireless and smiling, soulfully speaking for the films he loved, expanding our horizons and introducing us to the pioneering and restless cinema of the new era.”

Dimopoulos was born in Paris in 1949. He studied cinema in France and began his career as a film critic for Avgi, an Athens-based daily left-wing newspaper.
