Oscar Pistorius, whose full name is Oscar Leonard Carl Pistorius, born on November 22, 1986, in Johannesburg, South Africa, was the first amputee to compete in an Olympic track event.
When he helped South Africa’s 4 x 400 relay team earn a silver medal at the 2011 International Association of Athletics (IAAF) world championships, he made history by becoming the first Paralympian to do so in an open competition. His sporting achievements were overshadowed by his 2015 murder conviction.
In neither of his lower legs, Pistorius’ fibula bones were present at birth. His legs were amputated below the knee when he was just 11 months old. Six months later, he had mastered walking on fibreglass pegs.
In high school, he participated in rugby and water polo up until 2003, when he had a knee injury. Pistorius started running on the track to try and heal his hurt knee. At the 2004 Paralympic Games in Athens, Pistorius placed third in the 100-meter competition but won the 200-meter event.

For the murder of his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp, Pistorius is currently serving a 13-year and five-month sentence at the Atteridgeville Correctional Centre in Pretoria.
