BOG warns Ghanaians against using cedi notes for bouquets, hampers but fails to explain why

Ghanaians have been warned against using the Ghana cedi notes for bouquets and hampers after receiving reports that people are using brand-new notes for such practices.

Dominic Owusu, the Director of Currency at the Bank of Ghana (BOG), said at a press conference held Thursday (March 30) that the central bank has noticed how some Ghanaians have been using new currencies to surprise their loved ones and friends in a form of bouquets and hampers.

These acts, according to Dominic Owusu, should not be encouraged in Ghana’s economy.

“It has come to our (Bank of Ghana) attention in recent times that people holding weddings, naming and other ceremonies use Ghana cedis as bouquets. Most of the time, the currencies are brand new,” Dominic disclosed.

“I would like to emphasize that this act should stop immediately. Bank of Ghana produced the cedis as a means for business transactions, not for bouquets. I’d like to plead with people involved in this act to stop,” he concluded.

However, Dominic Owusu failed to give the real reason why the cedi notes shouldn’t be used as bouquets and hampers.

These practices, including money showering at weddings, don’t happen just in Ghana. We have seen countless viral videos where even US dollar notes have been used for bouquets and hampers and didn’t have any negative economic impact on the American economy.

Perhaps, the Bank of Ghana will go back and prepare its PR backing for making such a blank statement about these acts.
